These are twisted, distended superficial veins. Valves in the veins prevent blood from draining back down the legs under the force of gravity. In old age and otherwise in some persons these become defective resulting in pooling of blood in superficial veins. Veins become swollen and distorted. Obesity, long hours of standing in job, pregnancy may result it. Back of the calf is the most common site. In some people it may not cause any symptoms but some may develop severe pain made worst by prolonged standing. Persons feel happy sitting keeping the legs at high level. In severe cases skin becomes thin, hard, scaly and even ulcer may develop. Wearing of elastic support stockings, sitting with feets up helps the patients.
